Obituary

Jerry Phillip Katzenberger was born in Potlatch on Dec. 2, 1941, and passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Lewiston on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019.

His family moved to Lewiston when he was 5 years old. Jerry often spoke fondly of his childhood, and loved his brother and his three sisters. His family lived in the same house throughout his youth. He attended Garfield Elementary and later graduated from Lewiston High School in 1959.

Jerry began his lifelong love of music at age 5, when his brother, Jack, encouraged him to pick up his first guitar. Jerry looked up to Jack and wanted to follow in his footsteps as a musician. Jerry would go on to become a world-class guitarist — playing across all genres of music in countless venues and with hundreds of accompanying musicians. He is well known in the valley for his influence and mentoring of other musicians. His family is grateful for the legacy he will leave behind with his beautiful recordings.

Jerry’s devotion to his family was complete. He adored his children and loved spending time with his grandchildren. After he retired, he would often willingly serve as a backup babysitter. He loved to retell the stories of his adventures in babysitting. Jerry was a humble man who would rarely if ever talk about himself, even though he possessed world-class talents.

Jerry loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping with his wife, family and friends. He loved staying active and could regularly be seen hiking the steps at Pioneer Park or going on bike rides with his family. He had a real love for animals and always had a pet cat.

Jerry had a long and successful career at Potlatch, where he began working at age 18 in 1960. He retired 37 years later, in 1997.

Jerry was loved by many for his gentle nature and loyal friendship. He will be missed, but the heavens will be forever filled with his beautiful music.

At the time of his passing, Jerry was married to his wife of 25 years, Phyllis. He is survived by Phyllis; his children, Tracey White, Brent (Lacey) Hassell, Derek (Beth) Katzenberger, Jeri Kay (Jon) Suman, Santiago (Carolyn) Ruiz and Cornelio Ruiz; his sisters, Janenne (Robert) O’Malley and Kattye (Elmer) Wortman; his grandchildren, Megan (Kyle) Scott, Emily White, Jordan Miller, Logan Rodgers, Antonio Suman, Tino Suman, Sabrina Ruiz and Ryan Katzenberger; and two great-grandchildren arriving in June.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer Phillip Katzenberger and Eva Pearl Katzenberger; his sister, Lilah Powe, and her husband, Tom; and his brother, Jack Katzenberger.

There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Eagles Lodge in Clarkston. Following the memorial, there will be a covered-dish meal with lots of music. The family is requesting donations be made in the form of food and music at the service.
