Obituary for Joan Steadman

Joan "Joanie" or "JoJo" Steadman, 94, died Thursday, June 7, 2018, in her home in Asotin, from complications due to aging. In hospice care for a short while, Joan died peacefully in her sleep.

She was born June 28, 1923, in Manchester, England, to Alexander and Eva (Jackson) Muirhead. In the 1930s, Joan's family moved to the London area for her dad's employment. Her family lived there during the "blitz" and World War II.

Joan married John "Jack" Steadman on Dec. 15, 1947, in Essex, England. Joan, with her family, operated a cafe called "The Singing Kettle" in rural Kent, England. In 1955, Joan and her husband immigrated to the U.S. They settled in Orange County, Calif., where they spent many happy years. Joan worked for the regional office of State Farm Insurance until she retired. Sewing projects, knitting, cake decorating, bowling and any class she could take filled her days. She traveled with her husband to Asia and the Far East, Europe, Bora Bora and Hawaii.

In 1981, Joan moved with her parents and sister to the Northwest and settled in Asotin, where she lived the rest of her life. In her later years, Joan and her sister loved to sit at the table in the kitchen and tell stories of their youth and recite poetry to anyone who was available to listen.

Joan was a kind, generous and wonderful lady who will be greatly missed by those who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Ann White, in 1943; her husband, John Steadman, in 1978; her father, Alexander Muirhead, in 1982; and her mother, Eva Muirhead, in 2005.

Survivors include sister Evelyn Lawson; nieces Shirley Brewer (Walter) of Kooskia and Gillian Smith (Craig) of Clarkston; nephews Alex Cooke (Kim) of Clarkston and Alan White (Bon) of Port Douglas, Australia; great-nieces Christina Sorenson of Lewiston, Carrie Marks of Clarkston, Tricia Ray of Boise, Ashley Moody of Shoreline, Wash., and Amanda Yancey of Spokane; great-nephews Andrew Moody of Eugene, Ore., Austin Moody of Denver and Travis Cooke of Gilbert, Ariz.; and 13 great-great-nieces and -nephews.

Very special thanks to all of her caregivers.

Cremation has already taken place through Merchant Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at a later date.
